Devotion: Worshipful Work

Life can feel like a constant grind sometimes, can't it? We're all balancing responsibilities—whether it's school, a job, family, or other commitments. It's easy to get overwhelmed and lose sight of why we're doing it all. We can get caught up in the stress of deadlines and the weight of expectations. But what if all that hard work isn't just about getting ahead or earning a paycheck? What if it's actually an act of worship?

What is work?
The Bible makes it clear that work is a core part of our identity, designed by God Himself. In Genesis, we see God working to create the world. Then, He gave humanity a purpose, a job to do, placing Adam "in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it" (Gn 2:15). God designed us to work, and this divine calling remained even after sin entered the world. One of the Ten Commandments even calls us to work: "You have six days each week for your ordinary work" (Ex 20:9).

When did work become a part of our lives?
From the very beginning. God created work and gave it to humanity as a gift and a purpose before sin entered the world. Even after sin made work more difficult, bringing "sweat on your brow" (Gn 3:19), the command to work remained. It's not a curse but a foundational part of who we are. It's an opportunity to partner with God in caring for His creation.

Who are we called to work for?
We are called to work for God and for the good of others, not just ourselves. The Bible warns against laziness and idleness. Proverbs is full of warnings against the "sluggard," someone who avoids their responsibilities. "A sluggard's craving will be his undoing, because his hands refuse to work" (Prv 21:25). Our work allows us to provide for our loved ones, as Paul states, "if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever" (1 Tm 5:8).

Why should we work hard?
We work hard to glorify God and to find purpose and meaning in our lives. When we shift our perspective from seeing work as a burden to seeing it as an act of worship, it changes everything. We work not for the praise of people, but to honor the one who gave us our abilities. "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people" (Col 3:23). This approach helps us avoid comparing ourselves to others. The goal isn't to be the best, but to be faithful with what God has given us.
How do we work in a way that honors God?
We work with a joyful heart, doing everything "in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Col 3:17). This means whether you are studying, doing a chore, or working a job, you can do it all for the glory of God. When we approach our work with this mindset, it becomes a way to express our gratitude to Him and find a deep sense of purpose that goes beyond our own accomplishments.

Individual Challenge
This week, when you sit down to work on a class assignment, a project, or a task, take a moment to pray before you begin. Ask God to help you see your work as an opportunity to glorify Him. As you work, remind yourself that you are doing it for the Lord. How would your life change if you put this individual challenge into practice today? What would the impact be on your family? How would your life look different?

Community Challenge
What would your Christian club look like if everyone applied the "individual challenge" to their lives? What would the impact of your club be on your university? What would the impact of your university be on your city? On your country? On the world?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of work and for the ability to use our hands, minds, and energy. We pray that you would help us see our tasks and responsibilities not as burdens, but as opportunities to honor You. Guide us to work with diligence and a joyful heart, and to remember that whatever we do, we are doing it for Your glory. Help us to find purpose and meaning in the daily grind and to be a blessing to those around us through our efforts. Amen.

Navy Bday Ball Region Southwest 2023

Almighty Father, our ever present help, refuge and strength. We invoke you to bless this gathering of the sons and daughters of liberty as we celebrate 248 years of American Naval Service. As we recount the courage and honor of the forefathers who donned our nation's cloth. We ask that you protect, guide and strengthen our comrades in arms who have heeded liberty's call to oppose tyranny and terrorism. As we take part in these Naval traditions, remind us that freedom comes at a cost. Remind our nation that they may sleep peacefully at night because our warriors of the sea stand ready to do violence on their behalf. Bless the families of these mariners who have sacrificed and now bear Old Glory over foreign shores. God bless America so that we may stand a nation for another 248 years with freedom and justice for all. In the name of He who is always faithful we pray, Amen
